by Juan F. Alvarado - Porterville Post Traffic Report :
On Saturday September 28, 2008 at 1100 PM on highway 190, drunk driver flew off the road and unto a utility pole next to Porterville College. The driver, a young Hispanic male, was driving a black sedan a high speeds, swerving on the highway and almost collided with other drivers before he drove his car off the road.
I personally witnessed firework like sparks coming from the college as I was heading westbound on HWY 190 and pulled over to see what happened. When I reached the scene of the collision a fire broke out in the brush area and the car. Witnesses to the incident were on the phone calling for help.
An unidentified security guard (pictured) pulled the man from the accident area and away from immediate danger as his car was on fire.
Chris Carrell and Curtis Landry, both from Porterville, were almost hit by the driver. "He was swerving a lot and driving very fast," stated Curtis Landry. Curtis also said that the driver swerved in front of him then he flew off the road into the embankment. "I saw my whole life flash right by me and thought I was gone. Then I saw his car fly over the rear of my car. I was just returning to my friend's house to get my wallet and then this happened, stated a frazzled Chris Carrell."
Authorities would not release any personal information at the time.
