(Sept 04 2008) - Porterville Police Dept - Press Release
by Sgt. Larry Rodriguez - Porterville Police Dept :
Porterville Police Chief Chuck McMillan and members of the Porterville Police Department will once again be participating in the “Wish Upon a Star” Shave the Brave on September 6, 2008.
Wish Upon a Star is a non-profit, law enforcement effort designed to grant the wishes of children afflicted with high-risk and life threatening illnesses.
Their services are available to children throughout the State of California, ages 3 through 18 years. Over 1,800 wishes have been granted during their 25 years of service. The organization believes that the granting of a wish is “medicine for the spirit” oftentimes allowing the children a physical improvement substantiated by medical tests.
As for the parents of these children who have been under great emotional and financial stress, the opportunity to join with their children in enjoying their happiness during these special moments is a priceless gift in itself.
Chief McMillan states, “Our Department wants to show our support for these children, and we will be seeking funds from our community hoping to raise as much money as possible to help them receive their wish.” Those who would like to donate to this great cause are encouraged to come to the Porterville Police Department, 350 N. “D” Street, and leave their donation with the Records Personnel.
On September 6, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Visalia Plaza Park, law enforcement, fire fighters, emergency and military personnel will come together to publicly shave their heads in support of children with cancer.
Chief McMillan explains that “the shaving of the heads is symbolic – it is a visual act of solidarity with children who have lost their hair to chemotherapy. Our message to them is clear – we respect your courage and we’ve come to help.”
The Porterville Police Dept is encouraging Porterville residents to come out to Plaza Park and support your local law enforcement officers while they shave their heads.
