On Friday, August 29th, 2008, the traffic unit of the Porterville Police Department conducted two sobriety checkpoints within the city.
The first checkpoint was located on Plano near Corona and was in operation from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
A total of 321 vehicles passed through this checkpoint and two drivers were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Fifteen other citations were issued for other offenses and 7 vehicles were towed for license violations. Two other arrests were made.
The second checkpoint was set up on Henderson west of Indiana and started at 11:30 PM, concluding at 2:30 AM. A total of 114 vehicles passed through this checkpoint and one driver was arrested for DUI.
An additional arrest was made for a felony drug possession warrant. Eight other citations were issued and 9 vehicles were towed.
These checkpoints were made possible through a grant from the State of California, Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Porterville Police Department has partnered with all other county law enforcement agencies in an “Avoid the 11” program targeting the problem of the drinking driver.
