(Mar 19 2008) - Porterville College Exhibition of the Art of George Tanimoto :
Post Special News : Post Editor -
The public is invited to see the Art of George Tanimoto, a Porterville artist.
The reception is for Thursday evening, April 3rd, from 5 – 7 pm
George Tanimoto, a mixed-media artist, describes himself as a “line artist”. His watercolors, acrylic paintings, and colored pencil drawings, although quite varied in subject matter, all have in common an original and somewhat off-centered perspective on the world. As one critic noted, “One look at a George Tanimoto painting will put a smile on your face”.
Mr. Tanimoto is a valley native with roots going back to Hawaii where his grandfather was a tombstone cutter on the Big Island. George gives credit to his grandfather for the family’s artistic gift. He graduated from high school in Sanger, California and went on to earn a degree in Industrial Arts at Fresno State, where he majored in wood working. Unfortunately, he found he had too many allergies to pursue his craft. For most of his working life, he has been a special education teacher at the Porterville Development Center.
With little formal training in fine art, Tanimoto has honed his skills through local workshops and classes, including drawing classes here at Porterville College. As George says, “I believe that a lot of my talent and creativity has evolved from many years of daily sketching, drawing, seeing and using many of the basic principles of art”. As he goes on to say, “Although I may choose whimsical subjects, I take my work seriously, taking time everyday to draw and paint”.
