Last night the Porterville Area Republican Assembly met and discussed, not unlike other political groups, the final numbers for the presidential primary for Tulare County. “And surprisingly,” says President Kelly West, “ this was one of the best argued meetings PARA has had in a long time.” Adding … “ if California was going to back McCain as a conservative then the party must redefine what a conservative is, because McCain ain’t no conservative.”
Most who were there said, in so many words, the main stream media is to blame for this untruth regarding Senator McCain’s concept of a conservative -- pointing out his senate record and alliances with the liberal democrats.
“California’s secretary of state numbers showed conservatives stayed home because they had no clear conservative choice,” PARA Vice President David Prado said. “All you heard after the debates from the media was … did the candidate appear presidential or did he look like a president. And if the people want another actor in the Whitehouse, then they should have voted for Thompson … and his acting wasn’t that great or he would still be in the race.”
Candidates such as Governor Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee and Congressman Ron Paul all but divided the collective conservative vote and by default - some pointed out – McCain became the winner.
On the positive side, secretary A. L. “LUCKY” Lucketta shared that PARA was listed as the 5th largest CRA unit in California and PARA was starting an aggressive membership campaign this year, hoping to be the largest unit by this time next year.
PARA meets monthly on the first Thursday of each month to discuss the political lay-of-the-land and go over what’s needed to get real conservatives into office. As well, the executive board and unit delegates have traveled to conventions and to Sacramento to meet with representative Senator Roy Ashburn and Assemblyman Bill Maze.
PARA assembles at 6pm at El Nuevo Restaurant, across from Mervyns.
