(Apr 25 2014) - Most govt data breaches caused by employees, says Verizon studyU.S.A. -- About 58 percent of cyber security incidents in the public sector were caused by employees, according to this year's annual Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report. About 34 percent were caused by employee accidents in handling data and about 24 percent by unapproved or malicious data use. Data handling errors could include emailing documents to the wrong person or forgetting to redact certain parts of a document, for example. They could also include mailing personal information to the wrong person through traditional mail, or not disposing of hard drives properly or shredding sensitive documents, the report says.

I reviewed the book recently for Physics Today. You can read my PT review here, but the long and short of it is that I was really, really impressed with the book. And I'm not easily impressed by most works of nuclear weapons history, popular or academic. I'm not surprised it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, either.

The evidence available for our 2010 Bulletin article persuaded us that Israel did steal uranium from the Apollo, Pennsylvania, plant of the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC).

The latest version of the relatively tiny spacecraft, which is just one quarter of the size of the space shuttles, was launched in December 2012 on a top-secret mission. The X-37B has a payload bay approximately the size of a pickup truck bed, and it is thought to be carrying highly sensitive cargo. Janet is the de facto name for a small fleet of passenger aircraft operated for the United States Air Force. Their aircraft transport military and contractor employees and currently serve mostly the Nevada National Security Site (most notably Area 51) from their terminal at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. The origin of the term "Janet" (Just Another Non-Existent Terminal) is obscure but it is used as a radio callsign. Due to the secretive nature of the airline, little is known about its organization.

When Gary McKinnon hacked into U.S. Space Command computers several years ago and learned of the existence of "non-terrestrial officers" and "fleet-to-fleet transfers" and a secret program called 'Solar Warden', he was charged by the Bush Justice Department with having committed "the biggest military computer hack of all time", and stood to face prison time of up to 70 years after extradition from UK. But trying earnest McKinnon in open court would involve his testifying to the above classified facts, and his attorney would be able to subpoena government officers to testify under oath about the Navy's Space Fleet. To date the extradition of McKinnon to the U.S. has gone nowhere. McKinnon also found out about the ships or craft within 'Solar Warden'.

Following the drone's "hard landing" it was run over by a "civilian vehicle" and the remains were gathered up by National Guard. (Jan 11 2014) - U.S. & U.K. Spy Agencies 'Intentionally' weakened securityU.S. & U.K. -- Norway's largest newspaper (Aftenposten) reports today that British spies pressured the developers of cellphone standards in the 1980s to intentionally weaken the cellphone's encryption. In other words, hackers can break into cellphone calls much more easily because the British spied intentionally made the encryption 1,000 times weaker than it otherwise would have been. This isn't the only example of Western spy agencies destroying security. The NSA paid leading encryption company RSA $10 million to weaken its encryption algorithm. Many other encryption companies have probably also accepted a deal with the devil.

The UAE's fear was that the equipment would contain back doors that would allow data sent to ground stations to be intercepted. Facing a major customer defection, will the French firms -- or, for that matter, anyone else trying to land a foreign contract -- continue to work with American component builders? Northrop Grumman and the Navy say they've just completed the ninth flight trial of the Triton unmanned aircraft system (UAS), an improvement upon its predecessor in the Air Force, the Global Hawk ... thus far, Triton has completed flights up to 9.4 hours at altitudes of 50,000 feet at the company's manufacturing facility in Palmdale, California. According to Northrop Grumman, Triton could support missions up to 24 hours.

While the document sets out plans for unmanned maritime, land and air vehicles, there is a lot of focus on the future capability of controversial drones, which, if the plans come to fruition, could deviate from mission commands set by humans if they spot a better target.

(Jan 01 2014) - Fast & Furious gun turns up at Mexico shootout sceneMEXICO -- A gun from the failed U.S. operation known as "Fast and Furious" turned up at the scene of a shootout between Mexican authorities and alleged cartel gunmen last month, according to CNN. U.S. officials told CNN at least one AK-47-style gun that could be traced back to the failed gun-walking scheme was found at the scene. The shootout on Dec. 18 left five alleged cartel members dead in Puerto Penasco, a popular tourist site in Mexico.
