"LUCKY" Lucketta - Porterville Post Editor : Around 3:00pm, one of Porterville’s Peace Officers noticed that a young child was left unattended in the front driver’s seat of car parked in a lot at a local restaurant. Instinctively he stopped to check on the child and observed that the parent was inside the restaurant picking up a “To-Go” order. The child was accompanied by an older sibling – still younger than state law requires. As it turned out there were three children and one female parent, who was informed by Porterville P.D. that she needed to transport children this young and small in Child Safety seats or Child booster seats. This more-than-kind officer instructed her not to drive home this way and to contact someone who had child safety seats. To be sure, this was an accident waiting to happen. (Feb 16 2008) - By Post Editor : A.L.Lucketta : PORTERVILLE, CA. -- While most skaters know they should be wearing helmets at Porterville's skate park, they also know you can still get hurt even if you do wear them. That aside, the real harm today was a rookie cops decision ... to act like a rookie. At about $175.00 a ticket, many were handed out. The skaters final impression of this new officer's firm decision left more than a new hole in their wallets -- it left a new hole in the hearts. "I was just sitting in the park and not riding anything," one 14 year old told the Post. "This changed my decision to become a police officer" -- another ticket holder shared. Once you rack up a few of these the fines you could pay upwards to $1000.00 dollars. One parent who stood off in the parking lot told the Post ... " this cop was treating these kids like they're gang members. And maybe the way this whole thing went down ... maybe a few of these kids just might cross that line because of what happened." When the Post got the call and arrived at the scene, heads were cool and words were not abusive. After the office left the skaters felt at ease and told their stories to the Post. NOTE : If you believe that one of Porterville's finest wasn't doing a fine job, e-mail the Post and we'll look into it.
